My Best Bites of 2013

By Krista,

bajancutters

The flying fish cutters from Cuz’s fish shack in Barbados were one of my favorite bites of the year, bar none. Especially with that bangin’ Bajan hot sauce. Can’t wait for more travels in 2014!

For us crazies in editorial-land, the end of the year only means one thing. No, it’s not holidays or parties or even mistletoe (dang it!), though those are fun too. It’s time for LISTS! Lot and lots of lists. Honestly creating these can get exhausting, but as evidenced by good ol’ Google analytics, people love ’em. They’re serviceable for readers, and quite frankly, useful for me as a writer. Especially one like this, which serves as a sort of diary of all the awesome things I’ve seen and eaten this year. More importantly, it reminds me of all the inspiring people who created these awesome bites that stand out so strongly in my mind.

Because I’m the Food Editor at LAist, My Best Bites of 2013 piece is based here in L.A., however I  was able to sneak in a few honorable mentions from around the globe at the end there.

Posting this here is also the start of more frequent posting of my work here on my personal site. You’ll be seeing a lot more of me in the new year. But for now, enjoy your holidays. I’ll see you in 2014!

In honor of #NationalTurtlesDay, I thought I'd repost this video of one of my favorite creatures of the sea. There's something just plain magical about swimming with these wise (and downright darling!) ocean dwellers.
Had such an amazing time at @AlisalGuestRR BBQ Bootcamp with the The Hitching Post, doing everything from horseback riding and spice blending classes to grillin n chillin Santa Maria style. I can't wait to get on the road (and up there) again!
Can we just transfer all of this into my dining room please -- especially these fabulous fixtures!?! Officially obsessed with all the darling Pasadena design shops that @vintagesplendor showed me yesterday, and mega inspired to work hard this week (and always) to get towards those life/house goals. #slay
This little spot is freaking awesome, from the design down to the meyer lemon curd blueberry pancakes, which were devoured so fast I didn't get a chance to shoot them. Trust. Worth the drive.
@anthonybourdain's Naxos episode of @cnn Parts Unknown reminded me of the amazing trip I had diving for uni, road tripping across the sheep-dotted countryside, and exploring the Cyclades coastline by boat. Pleased to see the vibrant Greek spirit is still alive and well in this beautiful, albeit conflicted, part of the world right now. #CNTravelershorties #happiness #ishotthat
ICYMI: king salmon fishing in Alaska is fun AF. Even if you don't catch a big one, the kelp beer bongs and incredible wildlife watching make up for it. Check out the vid of my experience at the link in my profile! #CNTravelershorties #flavor @cntraveler @cntravelershorties
Bun Bo Hue to save the day!
Wish I could have these beautiful baguettes from @oddfellowscafe delivered down south. (Oh, and @mkretovics too.)
The cutest little lighthouse on Vashon Island.
Was bowled over once more by all the creative uses of PNW produce this weekend, namely the many iterations of rhubarb. Bread and butter pickled! Rose candied! Butter cream frosting! With vanilla as shrub! There wasn't a roasted cauliflower or brussels sprout in sight. If this is what cooks here can do in shoulder season, I can't WAIT to see what summer has in store. #pnwonderland
Was wowed by dinner here last week, and brunch today (including this lovely arrangement of pickles) was also BEYOND incredible. Had an amazing meal at the new Upper Bar Ferdinand this weekend, too. No joke Matt Dillon and his team are cooking some of the best, most thoughtful food I've had in the US not just this year, but period. End of story.
From the colorful Craftsmans and quaint growers market to the pint-sized lighthouse, everything about Vashon Island is almost too cute to handle. Such a wonderful bohemian island just a short ferry ride from the throws of Seattle. Def a PNW must-see! Check out my Snapchat story over @travelandleisure for more!
OK Seattle, I'm pickin up what you're throwin down. I could definitely get used to this. #pnwonderland #pnw #visitseattle
All of the lights, all of the lights.
