My Best Bites of 2013

bajancutters

The flying fish cutters from Cuz’s fish shack in Barbados were one of my favorite bites of the year, bar none. Especially with that bangin’ Bajan hot sauce. Can’t wait for more travels in 2014!

For us crazies in editorial-land, the end of the year only means one thing. No, it’s not holidays or parties or even mistletoe (dang it!), though those are fun too. It’s time for LISTS! Lot and lots of lists. Honestly creating these can get exhausting, but as evidenced by good ol’ Google analytics, people love ‘em. They’re serviceable for readers, and quite frankly, useful for me as a writer. Especially one like this, which serves as a sort of diary of all the awesome things I’ve seen and eaten this year. More importantly, it reminds me of all the inspiring people who created these awesome bites that stand out so strongly in my mind.

Because I’m the Food Editor at LAist, My Best Bites of 2013 piece is based here in L.A., however I Β was able to sneak in a few honorable mentions from around the globe at the end there.

Posting this here is also the start of more frequent posting of my work here on my personal site. You’ll be seeing a lot more of me in the new year. But for now, enjoy your holidays. I’ll see you in 2014!

I remember a few years ago posting a pic of my morning routine of sardines, avo and toast and people jeering in the comments. I'm SO glad the world's finally caught on to the deliciousness of these omega-3 packed sustainable swimmers! Here I've got some oil cured Japanese sardines from Gjusta w/brown rice toast and my fave fruit, THE AVOCADO! Can't wait to get to Japan in a few weeks to eat these suckers on their home turf! πŸŸπŸ‘πŸΌ
Do yourself a favor and drop by the newly opened ICDC for ice cream, coffee and donuts this weekend. Their signature drink is made of this obscenely pretty salt and pepper caramel donut and a shot of Aussie espresso topped with a ridiculously creamy, gelato-esque scoop of house made vanilla. There are not enough exclamation points in the world, folks. Do it! #bakeitforward
This native Angeleno loves tacos so much, I'm pretty sure I suffer from the same taco neck syndrome Shaq did. (Remember those ridiculous Taco Bell commercials back in the day?!?) I cannot get enough! @Guisados is always one of my first stops when returning home from the road. So happy to be home! Also: wtf, STILL no taco emoji?!?
Super stoked to see my bone broth making a cameo in this month's issue of @WomensHealthMag! I've been making this hearty brodo weekly in my pressure cooker since testing the recipe -- which is quite a bit different than the simple stock my mom taught me to make growing up, trust. It's incredible to sip solo, but I've been using it as a base for soups, stews, and sauces. Check out the recipe video in my profile.
Sometimes life just requires cupcakes. Gonna have to hit @Hot8Yoga super hard tonight, but Big Man Bakes red velvet minis are SO WORTH IT.
My old lady version of rollin one up on #420 with Kazunori's dank blue crab hand roll. Because sometimes Mondays require Sapporo. And sushi. And some uplifting tunes from @Odesza. (Sorry Santa Cruz, those days are done.)
This has genuinely been one of the most challenging, emotionally draining weeks of my life. The only calming part of this roller coaster has been the support of my family, @mkretovics and this amazing macro bowl from M Cafe. Here's to (hopefully) a better one ahead!
Had a blasty blast chatting food and social media with these badass babes @whatsgabycookin @lesliedurso @gigieats at the UCLA Restaurant Industry Conference. And a special shout out to Leslie's Stretch Armstrong arms for making this selfie a reality!
Last night I enjoyed the loveliest, mostly plant-based meal at the rad @scratchbarla @thegadareneswine pop-up @coachella. This colorful roasted cauliflower dish with cauli stem "jerkey" was one of my faves, along with the INCREDIBLE coconut custard w/mojito granita and brown sugar crumble. Coachella really has grown up!
Starting out the day with power yoga and green juice with my boo at the Hawaiian Tropic/Nanette Lepore party at one of my fave Palm Springs properties. Time to reset before round 3! πŸŒ΄πŸ‘
I am freaking giddy in love with every nook and cranny of this property. Can I please keep the bird's nest? Pretty please?!? 😍
If you're looking for some calm amidst the @Coachella storm, do yourself a favor and book one of the Outstanding in the Field long table farm dinners. Great wine and cocktails are a' flowin, and you'll get one of the most gorge meals with desert palms and the Sahara tent as your backdrop. Always such a treat, this has definitely become one of my Coachella traditions. (If you're out here, you can book thru the @Reserve app.)πŸŒ΄πŸ·πŸ΄πŸ‘Œ
The fine folks @TheFareTrade featured me as their guest editor this month, and did a fun Q&A on how I've turned my passion for culinary adventure and food storytelling into a career. It was a real treat to reflect on my journey, and I hope it might inspire some of you to find what you love and figure out a way to make a living doing it! You can check it out at the link in my profile. πŸ™
Feeling SO MUCH CLOSER to human after a fabulous facial @dermalogica and an awesome smoothie pick-me-up from @KreationJuice. My skin was tired with a capital T after all the boats, busses, cabs, and planes, and this was just what I needed. Now time to start logging footage and answering the mountains of emails! πŸ‘Š How do you reset and bring back balance after a trip?
Let's be honest, coming home from incredible international travel can kinda suck. What I do love, though, is getting back in the kitchen and cooking! I started off today clean with this pomegranate blueberry bowl, made with heaps of fresh fruit, kale, oats and sunflower seeds, plus some of my fave Vega powder for good measure. Now off to yoga to set my system straight!
I just feel so at home, so genuinely happy, and so truly ME by the sea. Guess that's why my parents called me The Little Mermaid growing up. πŸ’™πŸŒŠπŸ˜Ž #fathominstatrip
So. Much. Seafood. ❀️ing the Anguillan style of celebrating the sea at Festival Del Mar. #fathominstatrip #beachesnresorts
I mean, is this place for REAL? I didn't know blues like this existed... πŸŒŠπŸŒ΄πŸ’™ #beachesnresorts
Sunset. Bankie Banx. Champs. Nuff said. Anguilla, I'm yours. #beachesnresorts
Poured tableside, this vibrant carrot gazpacho with the tenderest, freshest conch crudo caught by local fisherman is the epitome of polished island dining. Chef Jeremy Bearman -- formerly of Rouge Tomate in NYC -- is KILLING IT at the newly revamped @Malliouhana in Anguilla. πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ
